GRAND JUNCTION, Colo — The first win as Red Leafs goes to SFU men's soccer after the team defeated Fort Lewis (Colorado) 1-0 on Thursday afternoon in an NCAA Division II non-conference game played at Community Hospital Unity Field.

Burnaby's Alan Soto, a senior transfer from Santa Clara University, scored the historic first goal as a Red Leaf in the 19^th minute off a feed from Devin O'Hea for the game-winner.

SFU has now rolled to three straight shutout victories since opening the season with a 1-0 home loss to No. 1 ranked Cal-State LA.

Fort Lewis directed 13 shots at junior goalkeeper Justyn Sandhu, who made four saves for his third straight shutout. Simon Fraser's .941 team save percentage to start the season ranks ninth in Division II.

SFU had 12 shots in the game with six on target.

The road trip will continue when the Red Leafs face No. 18 nationally ranked Colorado Mesa on Saturday. SFU is No. 6 in the United Coaches West Region Ranking.

SFU unveiled its new varsity team name on Tuesday, choosing Red Leafs, a name that honours SFU's iconic leaf that student-athletes have worn for generations and reflects the university's identity as Canada's only NCAA team.

SFU opens its conference schedule at Montana State Billings on Sept. 22 and plays its GNAC home opener on Sept. 29 at SFU Stadium. Men's soccer season tickets are on sale now for $59.50 here
