Red Leafs Show Up With Urgency, Sweep MSUB in West Gym

BURNABY, B.C. – In maybe their most dominant performance of the season, the SFU Red Leafs earned a clean sweep on Saturday night at West Gym. Welcoming the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets to the mountain, SFU took the three frames by scores of 25-14, 25-16, and 25-15.

"It was a really exciting game," said SFU senior middle blocker Kohl Peters. "We had a bit of a tougher loss on Thursday, so it was nice to bounce back and see everyone at full energy. It was cool to see the entire team involved, and that was a great part of tonight."

Despite posting near-double-digit victories in each of the three sets, the scores may undersell how impressive SFU was. Starting with the offense, SFU got kills from seven different players. Kalyn Hartmann (Langley, B.C.) led the Red Leafs with 10 kills, while Jocelyn Sherman (Victoria, B.C.) had nine. Hanna Kolof (Vancouver) and Sophie Lachapelle (Kelowna, B.C.) had eight each.

SFU's service game was also excellent on both offence and defence, as the Red Leafs notched eight aces while holding the Yellowjackets to just one.

SFU's defense was also full value through the run of regular play, as they held MSUB to just 20 kills on a .027 attacking efficiency mark. Both are season lows for a Red Leafs opponent this season.

SFU didn't trail past the third point of either of the first two sets, and never really allowed the Yellowjackets to even catch their breath. The Red Leafs reeled off several runs of 4-5 unanswered points as they continued to hammer MSUB.

The Yellowjackets did well to settle early in the third set, going shot-for-shot with the Red Leafs en route to being tied 10-10 midway through.

SFU then got three kills apiece from Kolof and Lachapelle, as well as a Sherman ace, as part of a 9-2 run. The Red Leafs continued to pull away in the late stages, before Sherman finally notched their final point of the match on a hammer of a kill.

SFU will be back on the road next week, as they head down to Lacey, Washington, to take on the Saint Martin's Saints on Thursday, November 9. The Red Leafs will then be spending Remembrance Day in Monmouth, Oregon, as they will take on the Western Oregon Wolves on Saturday, November 11.

Fans have two more home games to cheer on SFU Volleyball. November 16 (7pm) is Unity Night against Central Washington. We will be giving away SFU logo rainbow socks, and the SAAC will be on hand to fundraise for LGBTQ+ causes. The season conludes on November 18 (5pm) with Senior Night as we honour the graduating class of Red Leafs. Tickets for both games are available online
