BURNABY, B.C. – With his SFU Red Leafs taking part in the Clackamas Open Sunday, junior Raphael Masella was an absolute force. The Scottsdale, Arizona, wrestler went a perfect 4-0 en route to winning the 285-pound heavyweight division.
 
Masella made quick work of his opening-round opponent, securing a pin of Lucas Buyas (unattached) in just 41 seconds. Masella then faced Linfield's Jacob Barnes and earned a hard-fought 5-2 decision in one of his closer matches of the meet.
 
Moving into the semifinals, Masella dispatched of another Linfield wrestler in Julian Ortiz in a  6-1 decision. Masella proceeded to dominate the first-place match, taking a 13-3 major decision over Corban's Sven Lukner.
 
It wrapped up a perfect weekend for Masella, who also won his bout in the Red Leafs' 45-9 dual-meet victory at Pacific (Oregon) on Saturday.
 
At 197 pounds, Sam Pereira earned a strong third-place finish for his efforts Sunday. The SFU sophomore from Winnipeg took his first two matches by bye and a decision, respectively, before falling to Oregon State's Jackson McKinney in the semis. Pereira then rebounded in his final two matches, winning by a 17-2 tech fall over Umpqua Community College's Hunter Hammer, then a 21-6 tech fall over David Jansen.

Senior Zach Stratton from Spokane Valley, Washington (184 lbs), sophomore Arashk Rasti of Burnaby, B.C. (174 lbs), and junior Marques Calapiz of Vancouver (125 lbs) all earned third-place finishes in their respective weight classes, as well. Stratton, in the loaded 184-pound class, had to go through seven opponents to earn his third-place ranking, winning his final two by pins in under 90 seconds.
 
Juniors Magnus McCrackin (Beaumont, Alta.) and Elijah Lazar (Salmon Arm, B.C.), at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, earned fourth-places results, while junior Ricky Feroce (Burrell, Pennsylvania) nabbed fifth spot just behind Stratton in the 184-lb class.
 
The Red Leafs will be home for a couple of weeks before heading back down south for their next meet. The Minnesota State Cactus Duals are set to run in Phoenix, Arizona, on Monday, December 16.
