Jahmal Wright (Toronto) posted an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double in his final career university game Saturday as Simon Fraser lost 90-79 at Western Washington Saturday night. It was his first double-double in his two seasons as a Red Leaf. Wright's performance Saturday included seven offensive rebounds.
In all, four SFU players reached double digits in points as the team's 2022-23 NCAA men's basketball season came to a conclusion. Junior guard
David Penney (Guelph, Ont.) recorded 20 points (a season high), five assists, and five rebounds to lead the Red Leafs (6-22, 1-17 Great Northwest Athletic Conference). Sophomore guard
Elliot Dimaculangan (Mississauga, Ont.) had a dozen points and six rebounds. Freshman guard
Zach Stone (Ottawa) contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
The host Vikings also had four double-digit scorers, led by Lucas Holden, who had 18 points and six rebounds. D'Angelo Minnis scored 17 points and had a team-high five assists.
The game featured 11 lead changes and 13 ties.
Western Washington scored the opening basket of the second half to go up 47-41 but the Red Leafs were efficient offensively early. SFU hit four of its opening five shots to tie the game at 49-49 on a Wright three-pointer. His offensive rebound and put-back with about 16 minutes left gave Canada's NCAA Team a 55-53 edge.
A Dimaculangan layup made it a 63-60 game in favour of the Red Leafs before the Vikings answered back with seven points in a row to take the lead for good. Despite the teams going back and forth, WWU stayed in front. Stone's layup cut SFU's deficit to 80-77 with 4:08 remaining in the game. The Vikings put together a 10-0 in response to clinch the victory.
