Poor shooting costly as Red Leafs fall to Saints on road

LACEY, Wash. – Simon Fraser couldn't survive a poor shooting night and lost 77-57 to Saint Martin's in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Thursday evening at Marcus Pavilion.
 
Jessica & Sophia Wisotzki combined for 29-points but they were the only Red Leafs to reach double figures in scoring as the team shot a season-low 33 percent from the field. SFU connected on just 22-of-65 (33.8 percent) field goals, went 8-of-33 (24.2 percent) on threes and was 5-of-9 at the line (55.6 percent).
 
SMU shot 29-of-54 (53.7 percent) from the field and won the battle of the boards, 43-30.
 
SFU led the game for just 90 seconds in the second quarter. Still, the Red Leafs managed to tie the Saints at 50-50 with 4:33 left in the third quarter, after trailing 41-34 at the half. But SMU held the Red Leafs scoreless the rest of the third quarter, surging back ahead on a 10-0 run. The Saints pushed the lead to 16-points 90 seconds into the final frame and won the fourth quarter decisively, 17-7.
 
Jessica Wisotzki scored 18-points on 8-of-22 shooting and Sophia Wisotzki scored 11-points, going 3-of-3 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line. Jessica also added nine rebounds.  
 
The loss leaves SFU in seventh spot in the GNAC with a 6-8 conference record, 8-10 overall. The Red Leafs play at Western Oregon (4-9, 10-11) on Saturday (2 p.m. tip-off).
 
SFU plays its final two home games next week. Saturday, Feb. 18, SFU hosts Montana State Billings (11-2, 20-4) in West Gym in its final regular season home game where the team's seniors will be honoured.
