BURNABY, B.C. – Two Simon Fraser wrestlers earned medals for Canada at the 2023 Junior (Under-20) Pan-American Championships, July 6-8, in Santiago, Chile.
Paige Maher of Port Alberni, B.C., won silver in the women's 72-kilogram weight class, while 
Sam Pereira of Winnipeg did the same in the men's freestyle 92-kg division. Maple Ridge, B.C.'s 
Ivy Threatful finished fourth among the competition's 53-kg women's wrestlers.

Maher pinned her first two opponents – Mia Kiyan Gardener (Peru) and Melanie Sanchez Morales (Chile) – to make the semifinal round where she beat Karla Castillo Garcia of Venezuela by decision, 8-5. In the championship final, she lost to American Haley Ward by fall.

Pereira won three of his four round-robin matches to place second overall. He pinned Angel Encinas (Mexico) in Round 1, before dropping his bout to Jack Darrah of the United States 8-3. Pereira beat Ricardo Gomez (Argentina) by technical fall and finished off the tournament with a 6-4 decision over Venezuela's Brian Ruiz.
