Red Leafs fire 22 shots at Colorado Mesa ‘keeper in scoreless draw

BURNABY – Simon Fraser fired 22 shots at the Colorado Mesa goalkeeper Diego Chavez but couldn't get one past him, settling for a scoreless tie in the Red Leafs final non-conference men's soccer game Saturday evening at Terry Fox Field.

SFU carried play throughout the contest with 62 percent of the possession. The Red Leafs fired 12 shots at Chavez in the first half and 10 in the second half but none found the back of the net. SFU out shot the Mavericks 22 to eight.

Chavez made all 13 saves while SFU goalkeeper Justyn Sandhu stopped four shots by Colorado Mesa in recording his third shutout of the season.

"This game was a positive step in the right direction for us growing as a group and identifying our strengths and weaknesses," said SFU head coach Clint Schneider. "It was a good litmus test for us to determine what we have, and I thought we were very good on the night, and I think a scoreless draw is a fair result."

"Colorado Mesa made it very difficult to break them down and now we have a week off prior to the start of conference play, and I think our guys feel like we are in a good spot, I know I do," continued Schneider.

"I think we are just scratching the surface of what we are capable of and we are headed in the right direction. That's exciting for me."
SFU is now 3-2-1 overall.

SFU will open Great Norwest Conference play on the road at Western Oregon on Thursday, Sept. 21 before returning home for a Saturday match against Saint Martin's that begins at 6 p.m. on Terry Fox Field.
