2024 DII CCA Canadian Tip-Off Classic
On November 1-3, the Langley Events Centre (Langley, BC), in partnership with Simon Fraser University Athletics, hosted the 2024 DII CCA Canadian Tip-Off Classic. The Langley Events Centre was buzzing with excitement on the final day of the 2024 DII CCA Canadian Tip-Off Classic, an exhilarating three-day tournament showcasing the best of collegiate basketball.
Over the course of 18 games, the event featured numerous standout performances, culminating in a thrilling conclusion. The women's draw included Simon Fraser University, University of Tampa, Dominican University of California, St. Edward's University, Seattle Pacific University and Gannon University. The men's draw included Simon Fraser University, University of Hawaii at Hilo, Western Oregon University, Saint Martin's University, Dallas Baptist University and Cal State University at San Bernardino.
On the men's side, Simon Fraser University (SFU) faced tough competition, finishing the tournament with a 0-3 record. Saint Martin's University emerged as the standout team, going undefeated with a 3-0 record, thanks to their high-octane offence and solid 2-3 zone defence, which proved challenging for their opponents.
The SFU Women's Basketball team performed commendably, ending the tournament with a 2-1 record. The Red Leafs took on the University of Tampa in the tournament's final game. The University of Tampa —a team that reached the Elite 8 in the previous NCAA DII National Tournament— dominated the game, led by Zoe Piller, who scored an impressive 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while shooting 12-14 from the field. Despite a strong effort from SFU's
Sophia Wisotzki, who recorded 29 points and three steals, the team struggled against Tampa's defence, effectively limiting SFU to just 6-of-29 shooting from beyond the arc.
The tournament highlighted the talent among the participating teams and set the stage for a competitive season ahead. As the 2024 DII CCA Canadian Tip-Off Classic ended, the SFU men's and women's basketball teams are ready to take the lessons learned into their future games, competing with renewed focus and determination. Fans can expect an exciting season as they support these promising teams.
