Box Score Coming off impressive back-to-back wins, the Simon Fraser Red Leafs looked poised to make it three in a row Wednesday night, taking GNAC conference leader Montana State Billings down to the wire. The boys from Burnaby would battle hard, but MSUB was able to squeak out the 76-72 victory.
It was a slow start offensively for both sides as SFU went one for five from the field, while also missing two from the stripe early. David Penney led the team with 25 points, with notable performances from Elliot Dimaculangan and Eric Beckett who had 16 and 10 points respectively. Immanuel Oludele would also put up a solid game with nine points and four rebounds, a line that included timely threes down the stretch.
Daniel Moody and Zharon Richmond would be the stars of the day for Yellowjackets, with Moody putting up a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebound and Richmond tallying 17 - grabbing an essential rebound that would end the game for the home team.
MSUB dominated the offense boards 11 to 5 as they improved their record to 16-3 on the season.
The Red Leafs came out firing in the second half, and would complete an 18-point swing after big buckets from Penney and Sasha Vujisic to take a 61-58 lead with just under nine minutes remaining. However, the visitors would rally, returning the favor via Richmond and Ben Fungula.
It came down to the final buzzer though, as Dimaculangan made a sensation steal with 40 seconds remaining, leading to a late layup that pulled the home team within two. However, a final rebound by Richmond would seal the game after he was fouled and converted both free throws.
The Red Leafs will return home for a game on Saturday, Feburary10 against Seattle Pacific, then will head on the road to visit Anchorage, Alaska on February 15.
