In 2013, Opperman moved from his home in Auckland, New Zealand to play for the Bearcats and appeared in 19 games as a freshman.

From 2011-13, Opperman played in the New Zealand men's national league and is a member of the Asia Pacific Football Academy.

He has also competed internationally, representing his country at the under-17 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.

In high school, he helped his school, Saint Kentigern College to a fifth place finish in New Zealand's national championship tournament in 2012.

He has also participated in the WYNRS Football Academy in New Zealand.
