Simon Fraser Men's Basketball signs NCAA D1 Transfer from Siena College

Simon Fraser University men’s basketball continues their strong recruiting summer with the addition of Michael Evbagharu, a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard from Siena College (NCAA Division 1, MAAC). Known for his versatility, competitiveness, and effectiveness playing multiple positions, the native of Scarborough, Ontario brings a unique skill set to SFU.

“We are extremely excited to add Michael Evbagharu to our 2024 recruiting class, said SFU head coach Steve Hanson. “Mike is one of the most versatile guards in the country who does what is needed to win games.  During their championship season at Royal Crown in 2023, Mike could do it all - guard the best players, rebound the basketball and make winning plays.”

Evbagharu played in 18 games during his freshman season at Siena, starting in seven. He averaged 5.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game, one of only eight NCAA D1 freshmen to average at least 5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. His season was highlighted by a standout performance against Milwaukee, where he scored 18 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists.

In high school, Evbagharu led Royal Crown Academic School to a 72-11 record over two seasons. He averaged 18.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals in his final season, earning Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association Regular Season MVP & Finals MVP honors. He was also named Co-MVP of the Biosteel All-Canadian Game.

Evbagharu also has extensive experience representing Canada on the national stage. In the summer of 2023, he represented Canada at the FIBA U19 World Cup, averaging 4.3 points and 4.0 rebounds in 15.0 minutes over seven games. He also competed for Team Canada at the 2022 FIBA U18 Americas Championship.

“I felt SFU was the best place to further my student-athlete journey, said Evbagharu. “Coach Hanson was already familiar with my game and my character. Playing for someone like that does a lot for my development.”

Evbagharu joins impressive 6’9 forward Luke Howard in committing to SFU this summer, with both players poised to make big contributions towards the Red Leafs pursuit of a GNAC championship next season.

SFU’s Beedie School of Business will add another excellent student-athlete in Evbagharu who was both valedictorian and an honour roll student in high s
