A native of Saint Lucia, Charlery moved to Montreal, QC in his teens, where he picked up basketball, although soccer was his first love.  After graduating from Brandon University with a Distributed Bachelor of Arts, a Minor in Business Administration and French, Charlery moved to Squamish, BC, where he started he coaching career at Quest University Canada.

He was an Assistant to the women’s team from 2010-2012, and an assistant with the men’s team from 2011-12. In 2012, Charlery became the women’s head coach, and won back to back PACWEST provincial championships from 2013-15. During their 2nd championship season in 2014-15, the team went 21-0, and became the first team to ever record a perfect 21-0 season.

As a player at Brandon University, Charlery was a five time Canada-West All-Star, an All-Canadian, an all CIS now U-Sports National Final 8 All-Star. Charlery is not only Brandon University’s leader in games started, but also the Canada West conference career leader in games started. “Rip” as he was known in his time at BU, started in 106 conference games over his career. In addition to being ranked second in career steals, third in steals/game, and 6th in points scored. In his second year of the 2006-2007 season, Charlery and the Bobcats reached the National Finals, earning a silver medal, where one of his dunks, made the TSN top 10 March Madness Dunks. 

Charlery joined SFU for the 2018-19 season.
