Veteran NCAA coach and former Washington Huskies star Mike Hayward joined the Simon Fraser University men’s basketball coaching staff as a full-time assistant in August 2018.
 
Mike brings over 20 years of coaching and playing experience and is very familiar with NCAA basketball in the pacific northwest. Hayward spent the 2018-19 season as an assistant at Pacific Lutheran University (NCAA Division III) after three seasons as an assistant coach at Saint Martin’s University. While on the staff at Saint Martin’s, the Saints qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history (2018) and eventual win over Cal Poly Pomona (1st Round). The team’s record was 25-8 that season. The Saints improved all three season Hayward was there, going from 15 wins to 17 and to 25 in 2017-18.
 
Hayward played college ball at the University of Washington where he was a power forward and Pac 10 Freshman of the Year in 1988. He averaged 14 points per game while starting 111 of 113 games in his collegiate career. Hayward continued playing basketball professionally overseas with teams in Finland, Australia, Austria, South Korea and Switzerland.
 
Hayward has his bachelors in Romance languages from the University of Washington (1991) and his MBA in International Business from European University – Montreux, Switzerland (1998).
 
Hayward is married to Laurie Wetzel, who was University of Washington's first NCAA volleyball All-American. They have two daughters who are both collegiate athletes.
