LANGLEY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball game survived a scare from the Trinity Western Spartans this evening, escaping the Langley Events Centre with a 56-50 victory for their second win in as many nights.

Chelsea Reist (Mission, B.C.) was on the floor for 35 minutes for SFU this evening and led the Clan with 12 points.

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Vernon, B.C.) recorded a double-double for the second time in as many nights, finishing second on the Clan with 11 points.  She also led all players with 18 rebounds.

"Trinity really competed hard tonight," said Head Coach Bruce Langford.  "I thought we played really well in the first four minutes and the last four minutes but our shot selection was pretty poor most of the night and we had too many unnecessary turnovers. Our defence was better than last night and that kept us in it."

The Clan won this evening, despite having some trouble shooting the ball.  SFU went 17-52 from the floor and 2-16 from beyond the arc.

Facing a Canadian Interuniversity Sport opponent in their home gym, the Clan were forced to play a slightly different format than normal, competing in four quarters of 10 minutes each rather than two halves.

Trinity Western scored the first basket of the game but the Clan quickly started a run to take a commanding lead in the first quarter.

SFU went on a 16-2 run to take a 12-point lead with three minutes to play in the opening quarter and then traded baskets with the Spartans, settling for an 18-8 advantage after the first.

The Spartans were all over SFU in the second quarter, holding the Clan to just five points while putting 13 on the board, making the score 23-21 for SFU at the half.

The rest of the game was a battle.

In the third quarter the Clan could not put any distance between themselves and their British Columbian rivals while the Spartans couldn't gain any ground.

The third quarter score was 16-16 and the two teams headed into the fourth with the same two point differential at 39-37.

The Spartans tied things up early in the fourth quarter and did not let up.

The Clan tried to hold off Trinity Western's advances but the Spartans were persistent, taking a 46-45 lead with just over six minutes to play, their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

TWU expanded that lead to five points, and gave the Clan a scare, holding a one point advantage with just over two minutes left in the game.

However the SFU women took the lead back in the final two minutes and hit their free throw opportunities late in the game to secure a 56-50 victory, their second win in as many nights.

The win pushes the Clan's record to 7-3 on the season as SFU will now turn their attention back to Great Northwest Athletic Conference action when they travel to Bellingham, Wash., on Saturday to face the Western Washington University Vikings at 3 p.m.
