Division I Cougars hand Clan first exhibition loss

10/31/2012 1:01:00 AM

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team continued their exhibition schedule on Tuesday night, falling to the Division I Washington State University Cougars, 67-52.

"We knew how they would play and we did not execute what we wanted to do," said head coach Bruce Langford. "We out rebounded them big in the first half which kept us close despite shooting poorly. In the second half, they took it up a notch and we did not respond. We marginally did a better job getting the ball to Nayo but not enough."

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) led all players with 22 points in the game and Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) tied for second most in the game with 12 points.

Raincock-Ekunwe also led all players in rebounds with 12.

Lia Galdeira led Washington State with 12 points in the contest and Shalie Dheensaw led the Cougars with five rebounds.

As a team, the Clan out rebounded Washington State 47-27 but the Cougars had 17 steals to the Clan's eight.

The Cougars had 31 points off turnovers in the game and shot 42 percent from the field while the Clan shot 35 percent.

The lead changed 12 times in the first half and the half eventually came to a close with Washington State holding a slim 31-28 lead over Simon Fraser.

The Cougars outscored the Clan 36-24 in the second half to secure the 15 point victory.

SFU is now 1-1 in exhibition play and the Clan will continue their exhibition schedule on Thursday against another Division I opponent, the Seattle University Redhawks in Seattle, Wash., at 7 p.m.
