DES MOINES, Iowa - After kicking off the meet with a win over the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday, the Simon Fraser University women's wrestling team beat Oklahoma City in the semi-final before dropping the championship dual to King College, taking second place at the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals.
Simon Fraser defeated Oklahoma City 27-17, winning six of 10 matches before losing to King 21-19, winning five matches and losing five.
It is the second year in a row the Clan have finished in the top two at the event after winning the championship in 2013.
Four Clan wrestlers went undefeated on the final day of the tournament as
Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, CA),
Helen Maroulis (Rockville, MD), Justina DiStasio (Coquitlam, BC) and
Jenna McLatchy (Chilliwack, BC) all went 2-0 on the day.
After dropping the opening match at 101-pounds against Oklahoma City, Anthony got the team their first win of the day, defeating Kristi Garr by technical fall.
Oklahoma City would win the next two matches before SFU took five of the final six bouts.
Maroulis started it by defeating Tanalei Louis by fall at 130-pounds before
Mallory Velte (Sacramento, CA) won over Rachel McFarland by decision at 136 and
Maegan Kuruvita (Duncan, BC) defeated Beatrize Martinez by decision at 143.
After losing at 155, DiStasio and McLatchy wrapped up the Clan win, both winning by fall over Sherese Thomas and Heather O'Connor respectively.
In the championship against King the Clan started strong with two wins in the opening two matches.
Darby Huckle (Sarnia, ON) got the dual off on the right foot with a win over Shannon Constantine by decision at 101-pounds before Anthony got her second win of the day, defeating Samantha Kingel by fall at 109.
SFU would drop the next two matches before Maroulis got the Clan back in the win column with a win by technical fall over Kayla Brendlinger at 130.
King College won the next three matches.
Although DiStasio and McLatchy wrapped up the dual with wins at 170 and 191-pounds, with DiStasio defeating Lorrie-Ann Ramos by technical fall and McLatchy defeating Malexsis McAdoo by decision, it was not enough to overcome the deficit as the Clan took second place at the meet.
The Clan will be back in action at the WCWA National Championship in St. Louis, Missouri, beginning January 24.
