Clan Puts On Offensive Showcase in Home Opener

Sizzling Clan defeats NIC 160-99

Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University men's basketball team put on an offensive clinic in their 2014 home opener, defeating the Northwest Indian College Eagles 160-99 on Friday night.

Seven Clan players hit double-digits in the game, led by redshirt-sophomore Adam Westfall (Gresham, OR) who scored 21 points on the night and junior transfer Roderick Taylor-Evans (Uplands, CA) who recorded Simon Fraser's first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds while also adding seven steals.

"I think the exhibitions we played prepared us for our first game tonight," said Westfall following his first home appearance with the Clan. "I just try to do what I'm asked to do, which is shoot. We want to run the ball and get the first good shot everytime."

The scoring was spread between thirteen Clan athletes, as the starting five-some of Taylor-Evans, Justin Cole (Los Angeles, CA), Sango Niang (Paris, France), Patrick Simon (Port Coquitlam, BC) and Michael Harper (Melbourne, Australia) played only 74 of the 200 minutes, allowing the Clan bench to run the court for the majority of the second half.

"It will be an exciting way to play this season," said head coach James Blake regarding the Clan's run-and-gun style. "We have so many athletes who can shoot the ball so we want to share the ball and play to that strength."

Simon Fraser opened the scoring and led the entire 40-minute game, putting up 108 shots on the night and shooting 57.4 percent from the field.

Despite the Clan's dominating offensive output, the Eagles still managed to score 99 points of their own thanks to Austin Miller and Kacy Green who scored 24 and 22 points respectively for the visitors.

SFU's pressing defence forced 50 points off of turnovers, but the Eagles were hot from the field, shooting 56.3 percent on three-point attempts and 54 percent from the field.

"It was a good home opener for us tonight," continued Blake. "Playing in front of fans, family and friends is exciting, but also somewhat distracting, so it took us a while to get where we wanted to be defensively."

The Clan starters scored a combined 71 points, while the bench rallied with 89 points collectively led by Westfall and redshirt-sophomore Hidde Vos (Barendrecht, Netherlands) with 17 points and five assists.

The Clan will host Northwest Indian College again Saturday evening in game-two of the weekend's double-header.

Tip-off in Burnaby's West Gym is at 4:00 p.m. and admission is free for SFU students.
