Clan earn split in season series with the Wildcats

2/6/2014 9:20:00 PM

Box Score Ellensburg, WA - The Simon Fraser University Clan women's basketball team avenged an earlier season loss to the Central Washington Wildcats at home, with a 75-61 victory on the road in Washington on Thursday night.

After a slow start to the game for the Clan, senior Chelsea Reist (Mission, BC) kept up her tenacity from the previous meeting between the two teams grabbing an offensive board which led to junior Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) making a three-pointer from the corner to make the score 6-5 Wildcats.

Coming off of the bench, senior Kia Van Laare (New Westminster, BC) brought a spark to the Clan offence as she made a three-pointer of her own. Then on the next Clan possession off of an offensive rebound, Van Laare added a bucket to give SFU a 20-18 lead.

Reist would finish with 11 points, while Van Laare added seven.

Central Washington would not back down though, as they trailed by just one point with six minutes remaining in the opening twenty minutes, 25-24.

However, that is when senior Rebecca Langmead (Torbay, NL) would make her presence felt down low, as following another Lowen three, Langmead would get the hoop and foul to complete the three point play. On the next possession Langmead made a nice power move for the score and give SFU a 33-24 advantage.

"We would pull ahead, then we would do a couple of things that would allow them to get back in it, then we would pull ahead again," said Head Coach Bruce Langford.

Langmead ended the game with nine points and three blocks, helping to limit Wildcats leading scorer Jessica VanDyke to just eight points.

SFU would stretch their lead to 10 points in the first half, following a Chambers mid-range jumper and then again on an Ellen Kett (Niddrie, AUS) three-pointer to make the score 40-30.

At the half, the Clan would hold a 40-32 lead, after shooting 45.5 percent from the field, while holding the Wildcats to just 36.7 percent.

Central Washington would come out strong in the second half however, as Courtney Johnson made one of her four three-pointers on the night to make the score 40-38 SFU.

Another three-point play by the Wildcats would keep the home team down by just two points, but SFU would turn it up a notch as the Clan would go on a 27-10 run over a 10 minute stretch during the middle portion of the half.

Sophomore Meg Wilson (London, ON) had a strong first half on the boards and then an equally strong second half near the hoop as she finished with 12 points and a game high 12 rebounds for the double-double.

The trio of Langmead, Reist and Wilson inside, had their best game of the season according to Langford.

"This was probably one of our better games from our bigs," he said. "They have an outstanding rebounder and scorer, and we held her to eight points. They all did a good job taking away her [shot]. I thought this was the best game they had all year."

In the end, the Clan shot a strong 46.8 percent from the field and a 35.3 percent clip from behind the arc.

As well, SFU shot 91.7 percent from the free throw line, while having an impressive 15-8 assist-to-turnover ratio.

With the win, the Clan improve to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

SFU will travel east to Nampa, ID where they will face Northwest Nazarene at 7:00 p.m. local time on Saturday.
