Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team defeated the University of Hawaii-Hilo in exciting fashion Tuesday evening with a 4-2 victory at home.
The Clan opened strong, showing composure in early moments of the game scoring only ten minutes into the first half.
Joel Malouf (Kelowna, BC) was able to connect with an
Alex Rowley corner-kick scoring a header goal for his first of the season.
The Clan kept the tempo up following their first goal, and six minutes later a
Ryan Dhillon (North Delta, BC) cross passed through the six-yard box and on to the foot of an incoming
Jovan Blagojevic (Coquitlam, BC).
The captain made no mistake, knocking the ball past Hilo goalkeeper Erick Lemus for his first of the night bringing the score to 2-0 for the Clan.
In the 34
th minute the Vulcans offence had a quick break that almost resulted in a goal, but were denied by freshman goalkeeper
Ivan Hutsulyak (Edmonton, AB) in his first start for the Clan.
The remainder of the first period would remain scoreless but not without effort from the home side as the Clan registered 13 of their 17 shots in the first 45 minutes.
The second period proved exciting as well, as the Clan scored on a penalty kick by Blagojevic in the 53
rd minute to put the home side up by three.
The Vulcans were not prepared to go home without a second half effort as Mike Reckmeyer helped build momentum striking back in the 71
st minute for the visitors to make it 3-1.
Reckmeyer would bring the score within one just minutes later, finishing a penalty kick in the Clan's end to make the score 3-2 for SFU.
The home side pulled together in the final half of the period as
Callum Powell (Leamington, England) put home another Dhillon cross for the insurance goal, with the game ending 4-2 for the Clan.
With the win, the Clan's record improves to 2-0 on the season.
SFU is back in action on Terry Fox Field on September 25 when they host Montana State University – Billings at 7:30p.m.
Admission is free for fans, and the game follows a women's soccer clash between SFU and Western Oregon at 5:00p.m.
