Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University men's soccer battled for 110 minutes, earning a 3-3 draw at home against Montana State-Billings in a thrilling conference match-up.
It was an action packed event with six goals scored and three red cards awarded, but the Clan were able to earn their second draw of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season.
The evening started off with a bang as captain Jovan Blagojevic (Coquitlam, BC) was awarded a penalty-kick 58-seconds into the game and made no-mistake, putting home his sixth goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Twelve minutes later however, MSUB was able to even the score as Thorge Jess put home a shot just out of reach of goalkeeper Brandon Watson (Victoria, BC).
The Clan buckled down following the equalizing goal, and were able to regain the lead in the 21st minute as Nico Schroettle (Dunauworth, Germany) scored the first goal of his collegiate career.
Then in minute 36, Ryan Dhillon (Delta, BC) was able to net his second goal of the season to put the Clan in a comfortable 3-1 position.
The score would stand the remainder of the period.
In the second half the teams would play at 3-1 for the first third of the period, as the Clan continued to maintain control over the Yellowjackets.
But in the 60th minute the momentum would shift as SFU's Joseph Martin (Surrey, BC) was given a red card and ejected from the game, forcing the Clan to play down a man for the remaining 30-minutes.
Here, the Yellowjackets began to garner some speed, countering the Clan's attacks and earning increased opportunities in the attacking end.
With 25 minutes remaining, Ivan Hutsulyak (Edmonton, AB) would take over in net for Watson, seeing time in his second game of the season.
The freshman was tested immediately, making a very difficult save only moments after hitting the field.
MSUB kept the pressure up and were rewarded three minutes later and three minutes following that, as the visitors were able to tie the game at 3-3.
With less than 20-minutes remaining, the Clan picked up their pressure, earning multiple chances in the final portion of the game.
SFU almost had the win with seven minutes left as Yellowjacket keeper Tom Lohmann made a game-changing save denying a one-timer from Blagojevic.
The game would go to overtime, both teams battling for the three points, earning chances on both sides of the field.
In the final minute of play, the Clan would go from down a man to up a man, as two MSUB players would receive their second yellow-cards of the night, going down to a nine-man side.
The Clan would get one final chance with 30-seconds to go after the third ejection as Joel Malouf nearly had a last-minute goal, getting knocked over in the 18-yard box with seconds left, his shot just inches outside the goal-post.
With the draw the Clan move to 2-1-1 on the regular season.
SFU will be back in action this Saturday, September 25, 2014 as they host Northwest Nazarene.
Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. on Terry Fox Field.
