Niang Scores Career-High 46 Points in Clan’s Loss to Wildcats

Simon Fraser continues to struggle in 2015, will look to regroup for upcoming four-game home-swing

Ellensburg, WA – Senior point guard Sango Niang was four assists from recording his first career triple-double putting up career-high numbers as the Clan fell 104-95 to Central Washington to close out this week's road trip.

Niang put up a career-high 46 points for SFU, while also pulling down 10 rebounds and recording six assists on the night to lead all players in the contest, as the GNAC leading scorer continued to display his prowess, shooting 18-28 from the floor and 3-5 from beyond the arc.

"I felt like I needed to step up tonight being that I am a senior and a captain of this team," said Niang. "I wish we could have pulled off the win, but I am surrounded by a lot of young guys who are learning and getting better with each game this season."

Despite their best efforts, the Clan dropped their sixth straight game to open 2015, following a similar pattern from the last several games, as they struggled to close on the Wildcats in the final moments of the game, despite maintaining a close score for the majority of the night.

"When you get into loosing slumps like this, each individual needs to hold themselves high and play with pride, and unfortunately we have only a few players who demonstrate that each game," said head coach James Blake.

"I'm looking forward to coming home for the next two weeks to get in some solid practices and prepare properly for the upcoming games. The fan support has been overwhelming this year and we really appreciate the interest in our play and hope to give our supporters an exciting four games at home."

The Clan was outshot 54.1 percent to 42.2 percent by the Wildcats, but the visitors were on-par with rebounding, showing improvement in a category they have previously struggled with.

Down by three points at the half, Simon Fraser stayed close to the hosts throughout the second half, as they attempted to earn the comeback, but the a hot shooting streak from the Wildcats with 10-minutes remaining was able hold the Clan far enough back to protect their lead.

SFU scored 21 points off of turnovers and outscored the CWU bench 28-23, but ultimately fell just short, losing 104-95.

Daniel Deflorimonte added 10 points to the Clan's campaign, and Justin Cole put up nine points and four rebounds, while Roderick Evans-Taylor and Mathjis van der Mars added eight points each.

"After nights like this I will get double-teamed and I need my teammates to make the open shots, because I will find them in those situations," Niang finished, looking ahead to the upcoming games.

With the loss, the Clan fall to 6-9 and 1-6 in GNAC play, but they will look to bounce back at home, hosting four consecutive games in the West Gym.

Tip-off for the first match will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22 as SFU hosts the Western Oregon Wolves. Out of town fans can follow along in HD on SFU's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/SFUSports/videos.
