VANCOUVER, BC – For the first time in five years Simon Fraser University faced the University of British Columbia in men's basketball and the Clan lost 101-71 to the Thunderbirds Tuesday evening at War Memorial Gym.
The Thunderbirds led from start to finish and scored 42 points off its bench to secure the win. UBC led 29-24 after the first period but outscored the Clan 25-11 in the second quarter for a 54-35 lead at the half. SFU was just 3-of-13 from the field in the second quarter.

JJ Pankratz scored 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting to lead all Clan scorers while senior
Michael Harper added 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and dished out five assists. Junior transfer
Max Barkeley went 9-of-9 from the free throw line to score 13 points, all but one of those coming in the first half.
Simon Fraser got just nine points from its bench.
SFU was out-rebounded by the 'Birds 38-27 and had 20 turnovers. UBC also took 29 more shots than the Clan. UBC shot 50.6% (40-79) from the field compared to 44.0% (22-50) by SFU.
The win gave the 'Birds the Buchanan Cup and a 3-2 preseason record.
It was the second exhibition loss for Simon Fraser, but NCAA rules to not include exhibition games on a team's overall record.
This is the first time the Clan has played the Thunderbirds since Simon Fraser left Canadian University Sport to join the NCAA in 2010 to become Canada's only NCAA team.
The rivalry between the schools dates back to 1965 when they played each other for the first time in any sport on the basketball floor. The first-ever meeting was won by SFU 61-51.
