ST. LOUIS, MO – Three Simon Fraser University wrestlers have advanced to the semifinals after Day 1 at the WCWA Women's College Nationals Friday at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, Mo.
 
Junior Darby Huckle (Sarnia, ON), freshman Abby Lloyd (Powell River, BC), and sophomore Jennifer Anderson (Pullayup, WA), have all advanced to the semifinals. Simon Fraser, the 2013 WCWA champion, was No. 4 ranked heading into nationals and for the first time did not have a No. 1 ranked wrestler at any weight class.
 
Huckle won both her matches today to advance to the semifinals in the 101-pound class against three-time WCWA champion Emily Webster of Oklahoma City. Webster is looking to become the third four-time WCWA champion, joining former Simon Fraser stars Victoria Anthony and Helen Maroulis who both won their fourth gold medals last year. Huckle, a junior from Sarnia, ON, lost to Webster in last year's final.
 
Lloyd, ranked No. 3 at 109-pounds heading into the tournament, picked up three victories and will face the No. 2 seed from King's College, Breonah Neal, in one semifinal tomorrow morning.
 
SFU's Jennifer Anderson ranked No. 5 at 130-pounds after going 30-7 this season, won three matches to advance to the semifinal.
 
Senior Bailley Halvorson, the No. 2 seed at 155-pounds, was upset in the quarterfinals.  After wins in her first two matches, Halvorson was in control and running out the clock when she was thrown by Hanna Hall (Campbellsville University) with three seconds left, losing a 12-10 decision. The best she can place now is third.
 
"It was the hardest loss of the day," said Clan coach Mike Jones.
 
Seniors Laura Anderson and Nikkie Brar are in the most difficult weight class with a 64 wrestlers competing at 116-pounds. The weight class is loaded with both returning finalists and six returning All-Americans.
 
Anderson won her first three matches before losing to the No. 2 seed Diaysha Moore (Lindenwood University St. Charles) in the quarterfinal. Brar won her first two matches before losing to No. 1 seed Haley Augello (King University).
 
"The two Clan seniors will meet first match tomorrow morning and unfortunately only one will advance," said Jones. 
 
The only Clan athlete eliminated was freshman Alyssa Wong at 143-pounds.
