Billings, MT – The Simon Fraser University softball team dropped two games against Montana State University – Billings Sunday morning, finishing the four-game weekend 1-3 overall.
Sunday's games marked the second of two double headers against the Yellowjackets this weekend, but the Clan was unable to build off the momentum of their win in game two on Saturday.
Simon Fraser fell 11-1 and 8-0 Sunday, struggling on offence against a tight MSUB defense and a line-up that got on the board quickly in both games.
"We just couldn't get a spark today," said head coach
Mike Renney. "Emotionally and physically we didn't show up and we weren't on."
Right fielder
Rachel Proctor scored the Clan's sole run of the day, firing her third home run of the weekend in the top of game one's fourth inning.
The Clan trailed early in both games and struggled to stage a comeback in either game as Montana made use of the league's mercy rule, with both games ending after the top of the fifth innings.
"I tip my hat to Montana today," Renney continued. "They came out with energy, scored runs early and shut down our offence. The games were all but done early from an emotional point for us."
The Clan recorded only five hits between the two games, while pitcher
Kelsie Hawkins who was credited with both losses, gave up 16 total hits.
"It is a tough end to this road trip, and we have to head home, lick our wounds, and gear up for the coming weekend," Renney finished. "We need to take the week to prepare for our coming games and come out playing more like we expect from this team and our program."
With the losses SFU moves to 11-13 overall and 2-6 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
The Clan will now gear up for a trip to California for the Mizuno Tournament of Champions, hosted in Turlock, Calif, March 27-29.
