Clan Shutout in Doubleheader vs Vikings

Western Washington University Vikings swept Simon Fraser University, 10-0 in five innings and 5-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University Vikings swept Simon Fraser University, 10-0 in five innings and 5-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.

WWU, which has won six straight games and 10 of its last 11, improved to 28-16 overall and is second in the GNAC standings at 17-7. Simon Fraser fell to 17-28 overall and 5-17 in GNAC play.

"We played with very little energy today and it showed in all aspects of the game," said Clan head coach Mike Renney.  "Our pitchers were not on and needed some help from the defense who themselves did not have a good game, combined with no offensive jump resulted in two shutout losses to a better team."

"Western Washington was full credit for their victories, playing two good games and getting the pitching and hits needed for the twin bill sweep at home on their Seniors Day," he added.

Clan freshman second base Taylor Lundrigan of Abbotsford picked up one hit in four at bats to move to within two hits of the SFU record for most hits in a season by a freshman. Lundrigan leads the Clan with 48 hits, two short of the record 50 set by Angela Lichty in 1999.

In the first game, Western Washington pitchers Makinlee Sellevold and Shayna Adelstein combined for a one-hit shutout, that a single by SFU's Taylor Gillis to lead off the fourth inning. Sellevold, who had retired nine straight to that point, was replaced by Adelstein after the hit.

Vikings' Alicia Fine  was 3-for-3, driving in four runs with a double and a home run, her sixth of the season.

The Vikings scored one run in the first, four in the second with Fine's two-run homer the big blow and five in the third.

In the second game, Sellevold gave up just a hit and a walk in four innings of work, combining with Holly Hawkins and Aspen Ison for a three-hit shutout. Hawkins pitched two innings and Ison one.

Clan freshman Alia Stachoski pitched all six innings giving up 11 hits to see her record fall to 8-10. She gave up a two-run homer in the third to Jordan Walley that made it 4-0.

SFU plays Sunday against Central Washington in Ellensburg, Wa., beginning at 1:00pm to close out its season.
