Clan falls to Alaska Anchorage, 86-66

The Simon Fraser University men’s basketball team lost 86-66 to third place Alaska Anchorage.

BURNABY, BC – The Simon Fraser University men's basketball team lost 86-66 to third place Alaska Anchorage in Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball action Saturday night in the West Gym.
Simon Fraser now owns a 1-19 record overall (0-14 in conference play). The Seawolves won for the second straight game to push their record to 18-7 overall (11-3 in conference play).
 
SFU started the game strong, trailing Alaska Anchorage 35-30 at the half, but the Clan was outplayed and outscored 51-36 in the second half.
 
The Clan's first half effort was led by strong team defense.
 
The difference in this game was free throws. Alaska shot 21 more free throws than the Clan. SFU was 11-of-18 (61%) on their free throws while UAA hit 82% (32-of-39).
 
The Clan was led in scoring by Gibran Sewani, Oshea Gairey, and Max Barkeley.
 
Sewani shot 7-of-9 from the field, and scored 16 total points. He gave the crowd something to cheer for when he put back a slam dunk early in the game's second half. Barkeley recorded 11 points and was 3-for-5 from the field, all three pointers. Gairey tallied twelve points to go along with 6 assists.  Gairey was creating chances for himself throughout the game. He ended with 13 field goal attempts.
 
SFU forward JJ Pankratz led SFU in rebounds with 6.  
 
SFU shot 49% from field goal range, as well as 47% from beyond the arc in the game. Alaska Anchorage responded with a 50% success rate from the field and 22% (2-of-9) on their 3 pointers.
 
Simon Fraser struggled to control possession in this one. They lost the turnover battle 23-16. The Seawolves punished SFU's mistakes, scoring 29 points off of SFU's turnovers.
 
UAA was led by the play of Brian McGill and his 34 points. He was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Seawolves forward Sekou Wiggs scored 24 points of his own.
 
SFU will look to get on track next Thursday when they take on Concordia on the road. Their next home game will take place at 7PM in the West Gym against Northwest Nazarene on February 18th.
