MESA, Colo. – Simon Fraser University won four matches but that wasn't enough as the NCAA No. 11 ranked Clan was upset 28-17 by Colorado Mesa in a men's wrestling dual meet Thursday.
Oscar Bulaqui won the opening 125-pound match, 11-6, over Channing Lewis and
Cruz Velasquez pinned Jared Johnshoy at 141 pounds to briefly give the Clan a 9-3 lead over the Mavericks. But Colorado peeled off five straight wins to clinch the dual victory.
Morgan Smith, ranked No. 2 at 197-pounds, ran his season record to 19-2 with a 15-0 technical fall win over Aaron Dick at the 6:49 mark of their match after Mesa had already clinched the dual victory.
Ciaran Ball followed that match by taking down Clayton Voytilla 5-0 at 285-pounds to close out the dual.
Simon Fraser suffered a big set back at 165-pounds when NCAA top-ranked
Tyler McLean, 23-3 this season, suffered an injury in the second minute of his match and had to withdraw.
The Clan will participate in the Tracy Borah Duals against some of the top teams in Division II on Saturday.
