Defending champion Parrish leads SFU to WCWA Nationals

Senior entering competition as top 123-pound wrestler, looking to guide young squad to first championship since 2013.

ATLANTA, GA — Six years removed from their last title, the Simon Fraser University women's wrestling team are entering the 2019 WCWA National Championships as one of the top squads in the nation.

The No. 4 ranked program, SFU is expected to be in a four-horse race for the team title according to USA Wrestling, along with No. 1 Menlo College, No. 2 McKendree University and No. 3 Wayland Baptist University.

While the Clan have two top-ranked wrestlers in Dominique Parrish at 123 pounds and Nicole Depa at 136 pounds, Depa suffered a late-season ACL injury and will be unable to compete.

Much of the group's hopes will therefore lie on the skill and leadership of Parrish, who head coach Justin Abdou believes should have a tremendous impact on a young, tenacious lineup.

"Parrish has missed some time lately with National team commitments and a minor injury or two, but having her back in the lineup may just be that spark that we need," said Abdou. "She is a great leader and tends to make those around her better.

"We definitely a lot of unknowns with this year's team and we will miss Depa, but this will be the most complete team that we have fielded all year."

As the 2018 WCWA champion in her weight class, Parrish has been sensational in every event that she has competed in this season, winning nearly every match by fall or technical fall.

SFU should be dominant at 123 pounds with teammate Alex Hedrick looking to once again reach the finals, a year after giving Parrish a scare at the last WCWA Nationals.

At 101 pounds, sophomore Alexia Seal will be looking to make an impact in her first time competing at the weight class for SFU. After mixed results at 109 earlier this year, the former World Junior 5th-place winner at 101 in 2017 will look to make noise at the collegiate level.

Meanwhile, at 109 pounds, Ciara McRae will look to turn a few heads after taking off the entire 2017-18 season, and at 130 pounds, sophomore Lauren Mason will be counted on to continue her strong season at a higher weight class.

An All-American in 2018 at 116 pounds, Mason may be giving up some size, but Abdou believes that she possesses the abilities and competitive spirit to make a run at a 130 title.

At 155 pounds, sophomore Alyvia Fiske has the potential to continue a big year in a weight class without a clear WCWA favourite. Having recently earned her first international gold medal for the United States at the Dave Schultz International in late January, Fiske is expected to go into the tournament seeded in the top four and could challenge for a title.

At 191 pounds, SFU will be represented by a true freshman in Serena Woldring, who has not lost to a WCWA opponent this year and will likely garner a top seed. She is one of three Clan first-year athletes set to compete at the event along with Jenna Garcia (136) and Sara Brinkac (143).

Rounding out SFU's 13 competing athletes competing at the tournament is sophomore Sunita Sewak, who will be wrestling at 130 pounds after earning All-American honours at 123 in 2018, along with fellow second year wrestlers Chloe Rogers (143), Alison Horne (155) and Rebekah Trudel (170).

Of the top-four ranked schools, only Simon Fraser has previously won the WCWA title, having captured the team title in 2013. Should Simon Fraser outperform Oklahoma City next weekend, it is likely that the Clan will take over as the program with the most WCWA champions in history.

OCU boasts 28 individual champions, with SFU close behind with 26. At last year's event, Campbellsville University won its first WCWA team title, edging out SFU by just five points in the team race.

The 2019 WCWA Nationals are being held at the Cobb Civic Center in Atlanta, Georgia hosted by Life University on February 8 and 9.
