FAIRBANKS, AK ---
The Simon Fraser Men's Basketball team suffered an 80 – 74 loss against Alaska University Fairbanks Thursday night. In the final moments, down by just four points, Simon Fraser was unable to close the final gap while Alaska ran the clock down. The loss leaves Simon Fraser at 3 – 2 in the Great Northwest Atlantic Conference, while Alaska Fairbanks moves up to 4 – 1.  Â
Simon Fraser was able to get the first points of the game on the board through
Julian Roche, but despite the good start for SFU, Alaska Fairbanks was quick to gain a 7-point lead within a minute elapsed in the first half.
Jasdeep Singh knocked down a few late first half shots in efforts to turn the game in Simon Fraser's favour, and Simon Fraser was able to get within one point of Alaska, but were not able to surpass them entering halftime down 28 – 38.Â
Â
In the second half, Simon Fraser was able to come within 4 points of Alaska in the final two minutes of the game. In a wild 20 second sequence, SFU went on an 8-0 run which was capped off by a steal and score off the inbound pass from David Penny, and SFU found themselves right back in the mix. With a tight score, both teams took turns at the free throw line as they each fouled at defensive opportunities.
Jasdeep Singh and
Michael Hannan were successful on the free throw line, contributing to remaining within two baskets of Alaska. However, Alaska would be just as successful with their free throws down the stretch, and in the end, Alaska would hold on for a 80 – 74 victory.
Simon Fraser game leaders included
Jasdeep Singh, putting up a total of 14 points, 2 blocks and picking up 8 rebounds.
Julian Roche and
Othniel Spence also had quality performances, with 10 and 9 points, 6 and 4 rebounds respectively. Simon Fraser will likely be looking to take better care of the ball in their second game in Alaska, as they turned it over a season-high 29 times in Fairbanks.
Up Next, Simon Fraser will play University of Alaska, Anchorage on Saturday at 6:15 PM.Â
