SFU grounds Falcons in Showdown triumph

BURNABY, B.C. – Senior guard/forward Jordan Lyons had a career night in Simon Fraser's 119-68 win over visiting Langara Sunday to wrap up The SFU Showdown men's basketball tournament at the West Gym in Burnaby, B.C.

Lyons scored 33 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, both career highs, to lead SFU. He made 14 of his 17 field goals, and five of his boards came on the offensive end.

Senior guard Josiah Mastandrea also had a game to remember, as he made seven of 10 three-point shots, and nine of 12 overall from the field en route to a 25-point outing. His seven baskets from long distance is tied for the second most in a game by an NCAA-era SFU player.

Senior forward Julian Roche was another dominant force Sunday, recording 18 points and 11 rebounds in just 17 minutes of action.

Elliot Dimaculangan, a freshman guard, distributed eight assists, scored 12 points, and posted five rebounds.

Langara led 4-2 early in the matchup, before SFU responded with an extended 36-6 run over a span of approximately eight minutes. The team forced six turnovers in that stretch, which saw Lyons pour in 10 points, and Dimaculangan eight. Mastandrea and Roche recorded six each.

SFU took a 52-30 advantage into halftime. The hosts continued to build on their lead in the second half as every player dressed provided contributions, and ended the night with points. With the exception of two starters, everyone on the roster saw at least 20 minutes on the floor.

SFU put together an 18-2 run over four minutes early in the second half. Sophomore guard David Penney threw an alley-oop pass to Lyons, slammed home a monstrous fast-break dunk to make it 74-37. On the team's next possession, Dimaculangan got an offensive rebound and converted the follow-up layup to cap the run and put SFU up 76-37.

"After a real emotional night last night, I knew it was not going to be easy to get up for Langara. They like to get up and down, they run well, and their energy was good early. I thought tonight was going to be an important game for our young guys to get minutes and I thought the second half was much better for them," said SFU head coach Steve Hanson.

For the second-straight day, Hanson's squad shot better than 50 per cent from the field. Against Langara, SFU converted 48 of 84 attempts, including 10 of 28 from distance. The Falcons, members of the Pacific Western Athletic Association, shot 39.1 per cent (25 of 64) from the floor and 31.6 per cent (six of 19) from beyond the three-point line. The home team also won the rebounding battle 50-33, and forced 27 turnovers while committing just 11.

Sunday's win gave SFU a perfect 2-0 record in its own tournament. It also beat UBC in front of a sell-out West Gym crowd of 1,600 Saturday night 90-82 to win the Buchanan Cup.

The team will be back on the road next week as it competes in the Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Junction, Colo. SFU will battle Western Colorado on Friday, Nov. 26, before facing host school Colorado Mesa on Saturday, Nov. 27.
