SFU women's volleyball drops road match at CWU

BURNABY, B.C. -- No. 22-ranked Simom Fraser fell 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-15) to Central Washington in their Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball matchup today in Ellensburg, Wash.

Freshman outside hitter Hanna Kolof led SFU (7-3, 1-2 GNAC) with 11 kills and five block assists. Freshman opposite Brooke Dexter and sophomore middle Kalyn Hartmann each chipped in with seven kills. Serena Gentile, the freshman setter, had 31 assists and 12 digs. Senior libero Bianca Te had a team-high 13 digs.

Ashley Kaufman paced the Wildcats (6-3, 3-1 GNAC) with 14 kills. Hannah Stires led all players with 21 digs.

CWU's hitting percentage for the match was .193 while SFU's was .091.

The Wildcats used late momentum to clinch the opening set at Nicholson Pavilion. Kolof and junior middle Farnaaz Johal teamed up on a block to cap off a short 3-0 run that got SFU to within one point of the hosts at 14-13. But the Wildcats outscored SFU 11-4 the rest of the way.

SFU was down 12-8 in the second but captured the next four points - thanks to a couple of kills from Kolof, one from Dexter, and an attack error from the home side - to tie the score. CWU regained the lead with runs of 4-0 and 5-1. SFU exhibited some strong net play in its comeback attempt. The team got three late points from blocks to close to 24-21. Johal had a solo one for SFU's 18th point. Then she and Kolof combined on a stuff that cut SFU's deficit to 24-19. Dexter and Hartmann got the block on the next play, before the Wildcats converted on their fourth set point.

The third set saw CWU take control with an extended 11-1 run after an SFU kill from Hartmann evened the score at 6-6.

SFU will return home for a pair of games next week at the West Gym. Alaska will visit Burnaby Mountain Thursday, while Alaska Anchorage will provide the opposition Saturday. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
