Red Leafs foursome combines for 56 kills in big win over Nighthawks

NAMPA, Id. – Hanna Kolof, Jocelyn Sherman, Brooke Dexter and Kalyn Hartmann all reached double digit kills to lead the SFU Red Leafs to a big 3-1 win over Northwest Nazarene Saturday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball action at Johnson Sports Center.
 
SFU (10-13 overall, 7-7 GNAC) won with set scores of 25-18, 16-25, 25-20 and 25-23, upsetting the Nighthawks, who entered the match in third in GNAC standings and now have a 16-7 overall record, 9-6 in the conference. SFU sits sixth in conference standings.
 
The Red Leaf foursome combined for 56 kills. Kolof led the way with 16 kills followed by Dexter (15) Sherman (13) and Hartmann (12). The foursome's 56 kills were 11 more than the entire Nighthawks team with 46.
 
Kalyn Hartmann led the way, hitting at a .286 clip, connecting on 12 of 28 attempts. She was followed by Kolof, who registered her 16 kills in 43 attempts, hitting at a .233 percentage. Sherman was 13 of 36 (.222) and Dexter earned her 15 kills in 39 tries (.179).
 
Eva Person had a season-high 46 assists and 14 digs for the Red Leafs. It's the third time this season she has reached 40 or more assists in a match.
 
SFU had a 61-46 edge in kills and outhit the Nighthawks, .245 - .200.
 
SFU trailed early in the first set, 7-4, but after tying the game at 10-10, went on an 8-0 run and was on its way to victory.
 
The Nighthawks led from start to finish in capturing set two 25-16.
 
The Red Leafs regrouped after the break, jumping out to 7-2 and 15-7 leads before NNU came back to pull withing two points at 17-15 and again at 20-18. Kolof had two kills and Dexter one, and the Red Leafs were aided by a pair of errors to close out set three.
 
The teams were tied 23-23 in the fourth set, when Kolof and Dexter came up with big hits, assisted by Pearson, to take the final two points and the match. SFU trailed 15-13 in the final set but outscored the Nighthawks 12-8 for the win. The final set was tied 10 times.
 
SFU returns home for its final two home games this season in West Gym. On Nov. 3, SFU will play Saint Martin's (7pm) and on Nov. 5, the Red Leafs with host Western Oregon (7pm). The game Nov. 5 will be the team's Senior Night.
