Emily Cue, Victoria Seal, and Marquesis Haintz lead SFU at largest-ever collegiate women’s wrestling tournament

BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser Red Leafs women's wrestling team – ranked seventh in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA poll – competed Friday and Saturday at the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, Missouri.
 
The event is one of the toughest on the continent, and with more than 500 entrants, it is the largest women's collegiate wrestling tournament ever. Forty-four collegiate squads took part, as did unattached athletes from programs starting competition next year, such as the powerhouse Division I Iowa Hawkeyes.
 
Three SFU wrestlers earned top-six placings.
 
Ranked second by the NWCA, Emily Cue of Parker, Colorado, finished second in the 170-pound weight class. She got a bye in the first round before reeling off four-consecutive wins via technical fall to make the final.
 
Cue beat Avry Warren of Brewton-Parker (Ga.) 10-0, Darby Weidl of Ottawa (Kan.) 12-0, and Gannon's Annabelle Helm 13-0 in the quarter-final. In the semifinal, she dispatched Cristina Santoyo (Emmanuel (Mass.)) 11-0. Cue fell 7-0 in the championship bout to Ashley Lekas of Augsburg (Minn.), the fourth-ranked NCAA wrestler at 170 pounds.
 
In the 123-pound division, Mission, B.C.'s Victoria Seal placed fourth. She earned technical-fall victories in her opening three matches:
15-4 vs. Allison Meyer (William Jewell (Mo.))
10-0 vs. Karlee Lachance (Central Methodist (Mo.))
12-2 vs. Olivia Mottley (Life (Ga.))
 
Seal pinned Alberta's Robbie Ann Pingal (2:57) in the all-Canadian quarter-final matchup.
 
Seal lost her semifinal via technical fall to Leilah Castro (Campbellsville (Ky.)) 10-0 but rebounded, getting past NCAA No. 3 wrestler Payton Stroud (McKendree (Ill.)) by technical fall 10-0 in the consolation semifinal. She was defeated in the third-place match 9-0 by Southern Oregon's Carolina Moreno.
 
At 130 pounds, Marquesis Haintz of Maple Ridge, B.C., took fifth spot. She dropped her opening match 6-5 to Zaynah McBryde of Life (Ga.). Then she got a consolation bye, and won six bouts in a row. The first came by fall over Lana Perez (Gannon (Pa.)) at 2:59.
 
She proceeded to record technical-fall wins over:
Anna Sondall of Iowa Central Community College (10-0)
Shaina Murry of McKendree (Ill.) (12-2)
Sixth-ranked NCAA wrestler Hailey Chapman of Colorado Mesa (10-0)
JoAnna Vanderwood of Iowa Wesleyan (10-0)
 
In consolation round 7, Haintz pinned NCAA No. 7 wrestler Alexandra Fitzgerald of Sacred Heart (Conn.) in 2:24 before her winning streak was halted in the consolation semifinal by Victoria Baez-Dillone of Umpqua Community College by technical fall, 11-1.She completed her weekend with a 7-0 triumph in the fifth-place match over Angela Vitiritti (Campbellsville (Ky.)).
 
The next event for the Red Leafs will be the Desert Duals Dec. 18 in Las Vegas.
