Nicolai Placzek and Devin O’Hea score first SFU goals in 2-0 triumph; Justyn Sandhu earns first SFU shutout

BURNABY, B.C. – Defender Nicolai Placzek and forward Devin O'Hea scored their first career goals for Simon Fraser in a 2-0 shutout of host Sonoma State (Calif.) Thursday afternoon in Rohnert Park, California.

Placzek is a sophomore from Breisach, Germany in his first year with SFU after transferring from NCAA Division I Alabama-Birmingham. He scored in the 40th minute, allowing his team to take a lead into halftime.

O'Hea, a North Vancouver junior who began his SFU career as a receiver on the football team, doubled the advantage in the 57th minute with his first NCAA goal. Junior defender Niko Papakyriakopoulos earned the assist.

Goalkeeper Justyn Sandhu stopped four Sonoma State shots for his first shutout with SFU. The junior from Richmond, B.C., is in his debut campaign with the program after playing three years with Div. I St. Bonaventure (N.Y.).

Sonoma State (0-1-2) had a slight 11-8 edge in shots, while both sides in Thursday's non-conference contest put four shots on net.

Senior forward Alan Soto of Burnaby, B.C., led SFU with three attempts towards the net.

It is SFU's first victory of the 2022 season after it opened with a 1-0 loss Saturday to No. 1-ranked California State Los Angeles.

The team will take the pitch again Saturday, when it travels to Chico State (Calif.) for an 11 a.m. non-conference game.
