BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser's
Emily Cue (Parker, Colorado),
Katja Osteen (Simi Valley, California) and
Victoria Seal (Mission, B.C.) all went undefeated Friday on the opening day of the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. All three Red Leafs earned berths in their respective semifinal rounds, and remain in contention to win individual national titles in their weight classes. They are also guaranteed top-six, All-America placings at the fourth annual meet, which is the championship event for NCAA women's wrestling programs.
In the team standings, SFU is sixth with 58 points. North Central (Illinois) leads the title race with 113.5 points, 10 ahead of King (Tennessee). The Red Leafs won 23 matches in total on Friday, and lost 11.
Seal is the top-ranked wrestler in the 116-pound weight class. She got a bye in her first contest, before earning 10-0 technical fall triumphs over Betty Cherry of Emmanuel (Georgia), and Natalie Majer of Carthage (Wisc.) in the quarter-final round. Seal will wrestle No. 4 Samara Chavez (King) in a semifinal match on Saturday.
No. 3-ranked Cue did something similar in the 170-pound weight class. After her bye, she defeated Mariyah Casados of Elmira (New York) by posting the first 10 points of their match. Cue then won her quarter-final bout against Cara Broadus of Sacred Heart (Connecticut) by technical fall, 12-0. Her semifinal matchup will be against No. 2 Cheyenne Bowman of King.
No. 4 Osteen got a bye in the first championship round, and then pinned Jada Arnold of Mount Olive (North Carolina) at a minute four seconds. Then she edged Colorado Mesa's Jayleen Sekona in a 2-1 decision – scoring the final point with 58 seconds left – to move on. Osteen also beat Sekona previously at the regional tournament. She will now face top-ranked Sydnee Kimber (McKendree) in Saturday's semifinal.
Seventh-ranked
Marquesis Haintz (Maple Ridge, B.C.) has ensured herself a top-eight result. She got a bye in the opening round and then advanced over Bridgette Schoultz of Delaware Valley (Pennsylvania) by technical fall, 10-0. Haintz dropped her quarter-final by fall to Cameron Guerin of McKendree (Illinois), but rebounded to win by technical fall 10-0 over Amor Tuttle (Wisconsin-Stevens Point). She needs to win three matches on Saturday to earn a third-place result.
The first semifinal matches will take place Saturday at 9 a.m. Pacific time / 11 a.m. Central. The weight class finals will start at 5 p.m. Pacific / 7 p.m. Central.
