SFU gets four All-America performances as Red Leafs place sixth at NCWWC

3/4/2023 6:31:00 PM

BURNABY, B.C. – A trio of Simon Fraser athletes – Emily Cue (Parker, Colorado), Marquesis Haintz (Maple Ridge, B.C.) and Victoria Seal (Mission, B.C.) – earned third-place finishes, and Katja Osteen (Simi Valley, California) placed sixth Saturday at the fourth annual National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Red Leafs ended sixth in the team standings, accumulating 86.5 points over two days of competition at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse. SFU won 30 matches at the national meet for NCAA women's wrestling programs, and lost 16.

In the 116-pound weight class, Seal dropped her morning semifinal by technical fall, 12-2, to Samara Chavez of King (Tennessee) but rebounded to sweep through the consolation side of the bracket to capture third place. She won by technical fall over Emily Klein of East Stroudsburg (Pennsylvania) 10-0 and then scored the first 11 points of her third-place match to triumph over King's Danielle Garcia. She earned All-America status for the first time in her career.

At 130 pounds, Haintz won all three of her Saturday consolation-side matches by technical fall to finish third. She became an All-American for the first time. Haintz beat Lillian Sherer from Lock Haven (Pennsylvania) 11-0 and then triumphed 12-0 over Sara Sterner of North Central (Illinois). In the third-place match, she outscored Montana Delawder (King) 8-2 in the opening period, and got four more points early in the second to secure the 12-2 win. Her only defeat at the NCWWC came against the eventual champion Cameron Guerin in the quarter-final round.

Cue lost by technical fall 13-2 to Cheyenne Bowman of King in the 170-pound semifinal but rebounded strongly to pin her next two opponents to win third place. She beat Alexandra Castillo (McKendree) by fall in 41 seconds and then Cara Broadus of Sacred Heart (Connecticut) in 48 seconds in the third-place bout. Cue also beat Broadus – by technical fall – earlier in the tournament. Her performance this weekend earned her All-America recognition for the third time in her career. Cue was previously an All-American in 2020 and 2022. SFU did not compete in the 2020-21 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Osteen was upended in her semifinal by technical fall, 11-0, by Sydnee Kimber from McKendree (Illinois), who went on to win the 191-pound national title. In the consolation semifinal, her battle against Sara Lake of Lindenwood (Missouri) ended 4-4 but Lake advanced by decision. Osteen then had to default her fifth-place contest because of injury. Her excellent sophomore season concluded with sixth-place showing and All-America recognition for the second year in a row.
