Game Recap: Basketball - M |

SFU downed at NNU

BURNABY, B.C. – Senior guard David Penney (Guelph, Ont.) led SFU with 13 points and seven rebounds in the Red Leafs' 69-51 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball defeat at Northwest Nazarene Thursday night in Nampa, Idaho. Penney's seven rebounds tied a career high, which he has achieved on three other occasions.

Junior guard Elliot Dimaculangan of Mississauga, Ont., recorded eight points and three steals. Junior forward Georges Lefebvre (Montreal) and sophomore guard/forward Immanuel Oludele (Niagara Falls, Ont.) each grabbed seven rebounds for SFU (3-16, 1-7 GNAC). Sophomore forward Sasha Vujisic (Burnaby, B.C.) blocked three shots.

The host Nighthawks (9-7, 5-3 GNAC) used an early 10-1 run to go in front 14-4. A subsequent 5-0 stretch by the Red Leafs, sparked by a steal and slam dunk from freshman forward Matthys Van Bylandt (North Vancouver, B.C.), cut the gap to 16-11.

Gabriel Murphy's two free throws increased NNU's advantage to 13 points at 32-19 with about seven minutes left in the opening half. Ryzin Bergersen's three-point basket late gave the home team its biggest lead – 41-26 – of the first 20 minutes. The Nighthawks led 41-30 at the mid-game break.

SFU could not cut into that margin in the second half, as Northwest Nazarene steadily built its advantage. The Nighthawks scored the first five points of the period, and led 55-39 with 11 minutes on the clock. They went up by 25 points – 63-38 – with 7:19 remaining.
