SFU Track and Field Shines at Bill Roe Classic

10/1/2024 9:19:00 AM

SFU Track and Field took on deep fields at the Bill Roe Classic this weekend in Bellingham, WA. Amongst others, the Men's and Women's teams faced the likes of Chico State and Western Washington, which are ranked 1st and 2nd in the region and 7th and 10th nationally. The Men's team ran a strong race, steadily moving up in the field as the race unravelled from 8th to 7th and finally finished 5th overall. Benjamin Schoening once again led the charge (34th), followed closely by Jose Castro (36th). "We had some sickness today on the Men's side, but once they are healthy, I'm expecting even better performances," says Brit Townsend.

The Women's team came away with a superb 4th place finish in such a deep field. They were led by Rachel Watkins, who secured another top 10 finish (8th), the second of two races. The rest of the Women's team ran strong as a group, with the next four scorers only being separated by 13 positions (24th – 37th).

When asked about the weekend, Brit Townsend said, "We are making progress each week, and I am very happy with the performances of our freshman today. Building onto two weeks ago, the women beat Seattle Pacific, and the men are closer to the front teams. Rachel ran outstanding today to finish in the top 10, and Ben again led the team in a very competitive field."

Next up for SFU is the Lewis Crossover in Romeoville, Ill., where they'll face up against another excellent field of teams.
