Red Leafs Fall Short in Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA - The host Alaska Nanooks would win the opening tip before quickly turning it over to give the Red Leafs their first lead. This would inevitably set the back and forth tone of the game. Skilled passing by the visiting Red Leafs would lead to the team's dominance in the first five minutes, with a notable performance from Junior Eric Beckett, who scored 5 of the first 9 points.

The Nanooks continued to trail the visitors, until Freshman Irish Coquia entered the contest. Coquia, navigating the game with style, would make a skillful pass to David Penney for a crowd silencing layup, following a well-executed dunk from the home team. The Freshman would rack up 4 assists and a three pointer in the first half.

Maintaining nearly 11 minutes of possession over the half, the Red Leafs would play a dominant game, the majority of which occured in the paint. Following a couple three pointers by the home team, the visiting Red Leafs would double down and take their biggest lead of the game, going up 28-22 courtesy of a layup from Freshman Matthys Van Bylandt.

Great defensive efforts from Van Bylandt and Coquia, would help in fending off the Alaskan team, who began to creep up on the scoresheet. Dominance would begin to slip for the Red Leafs in the last 5 minutes, as the Nanooks would ring off 4 three pointers to take the 40-34 lead.

Coming out of the break, both teams would struggle to score in the paint. Sophmore Zach Stone would quickly change the tone, sinking a three pointer, followed by an electric dunk from Junior Elliot Dimaculangan's court length pass. The Nanooks however would fight back and take their biggest lead of the game 54-43 at the 13 minute mark.

The Nanooks continued to maintain a strong lead with 10 minutes to go, before an electric performance from Senior David Penney. Penney would go on to rack up two assists and 8 points in four minutes before notching his 16th point of the game on a jump shot, which would put the Red Leafs up 63-61 with seven minutes remaining on the clock.

The Nanooks, rattled by the sudden uptick in energy from the Red Leafs, changed their tone, creating multiple turnovers and took control of the lead. The Red Leafs would trail the home team for the remaining 5 minutes, inevitably falling 74-71 to the Alaska Nanooks on the road.
