SFU Track and Field welcomes Surrey's Meagan McKay, a Sullivan Heights Secondary graduate, to the roster. Meagan plans to study in SFU's Undergraduate Studies in Education program while continuing her development in track and field.
Meagan's most meaningful athletic experience so far was competing in Nanaimo, BC, where she cleared 1.57m in the high jump. She aims to move her high jump past 1.60m and to throw over 40m in the javelin as she settles into a more consistent training environment at SFU.
SFU appealed to Meagan because it allowed her to stay close to home while competing in the NCAA, and because of SFU's Faculty of Education. She also cited that getting to know some of the athletes on the team made the decision feel more comfortable.
A conversation with jumps coach Jerrold Jones played an important role in her choice. "Meagan has never really trained in a high-performance environment before, and I think that change can make a real difference for her," he said. "I was also glad she had the courage to reach out and start that conversation."
Head coach
Brit Townsend is pleased to add another local athlete. "We're happy to add another SFU girl to our roster," said Townsend. "Meagan seems like she'll fit in well with the group and contribute to our team culture."
