Smith Earns Player of the Year as Red Leafs Take Seven All-Conference Spots

5/2/2025 2:33:00 PM

Simon Fraser University's Dana Smith wrapped up an outstanding sophomore campaign by being named the 2024-25 GNAC Women's Golf Player of the Year. Building on her strong rookie season, Smith helped power the Red Leafs to their third consecutive GNAC Championships team title, reinforcing SFU's place at the top of the conference.

Smith finished the season ranked second in the GNAC with a scoring average of 75.0 strokes per round. She tied for third at the 2025 GNAC Championships and was a consistent force all year, playing 21 of 23 total rounds for SFU. Her season featured five top-five finishes and three rounds at par or better—evidence of her steady performance and impact on team success.

Smith becomes the fourth Red Leaf in program history to earn the league's top individual honour, joining an elite group that includes Emily Leung (2017, 2020), Shirin Anjarwalla (2022), and defending winner Meera Minhas (2024). She is also just the sixth player in GNAC women's golf history to collect both Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year honours during her career.

First-year head coach Krysta Schaus was recognized as GNAC Coach of the Year after leading SFU to a dominant season. The Red Leafs posted a team scoring average of 301.7 strokes per round—more than 10 strokes better than the next closest program—and captured the GNAC Championships by four strokes with a two-round team score of 607 (312-295).

SFU also placed two additional players on the GNAC all-conference first team. Junior Meera Minhas led the field at the conference championships, winning the individual title with a 147 (76-71) at Coeur d'Alene Resort. Over the season, she averaged 75.6 strokes per round, earned three top-five finishes, and carded par or better in four of her 23 rounds.

Junior Izzy Ferguson topped the GNAC with a scoring average of 74.8. She delivered a fifth-place finish at the conference championships, led SFU with five rounds at par or better, and recorded six top-10 finishes, including two inside the top five—securing her second all-conference selection.

Three more Red Leafs earned second-team all-league honours. Chloe Tran ranked seventh in the GNAC with a 77.4 average across 16 rounds. Anaya Bhandal followed closely at 77.9 and contributed to the title run with a 17th-place finish at GNACs. Sueah Park collected her third all-conference nod after posting a 78.2 average in the 2024-25 season.
