Adam Jones Scores Twice In 2-0 Win Over NNU

Simon Fraser University freshman Adam Jones scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick and then added an insurance marker late in the game to lift the Clan to a 2-0 win over Nazarene in men’s soccer action Saturday

NAMPA, Idaho — Simon Fraser University freshman Adam Jones scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick and then added an insurance marker late in the game to lift the Clan to a 2-0 win over Northwest Nazarene in men's soccer action Saturday.

Simon Fraser was awarded a free kick after a hand ball in the goal box when a free kick into the NNU defensive wall hit one of the players in the arm. Jones was actually stopped by NNU goalkeeper Ryan Foo, who made a diving save to his right, on the first penalty kick. The referee, however, whistled the play dead following the save, saying an NNU player jumped into the goal-box early on the kick, an infraction resulting in a re-kick.

Jones booted home the ball on his second chance for his seventh goal of the season. The Clan rode that 1-0 lead all game long until Jones found the back of the net in the 87th minute.

With NNU pressing to tie the game, the Clan capitalized on a counter-attack as James Fraser grabbed a long goal-kick, centered a pass to Jones and he iced the win with 2:25 left to play, beating Foo one-on-one.

The win improved Simon Fraser's record to 9-3-4 overall and the team sits second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 8-2-3 and 27 points. The Clan trails Seattle Pacific, 9-1-3 in the conference with 30 points. The Falcons have clinched a share of the GNAC Championship.

"It was a very difficult game to play in and emotions were very high," said Clan head coach Clint Schneider. "I am very proud of the grit and maturity of my team, they put in a great effort today."

NNU is 11-6-1 overall, 7-5-1 GNAC. They are in third in the conference.

Foo made seven saves in goal in the contest for the Crusaders while Clan 'keeper Brandon Watson faced seven shots, making three saves.

The Clan wraps up their 2015 regular season at home on Nov. 7 against Western Washington at 7:30 PM, then will await their NCAA National Tournament fate as the selection show will be Nov. 9 at 3 PM.
