BISMARCK, N.D. – A breakaway goal in the 89th minute gave the University of Mary a 1-0 win over Simon Fraser University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Thursday in Bismarck, ND.
The Marauders (2-3-1, 1-0-1 GNAC) utilized a stout defense through the first 88 minutes of the half to keep the Clan off the score sheet before a breakaway goal by James Liddiard with 66 seconds left gave UM its first home victory of the season.
"We are extremely disappointed," said Clan head coach
Clint Schneider. "This is the same story, different week. We are just not able to finish off our opponents when we get our chances. We are a good football team that lacks a killer instinct but we are going to have to find it very quickly."
Simon Fraser fell to 1-2-2, 0-1-1 in the GNAC.
"I've been in football a long time and I have never experienced anything like this where we create so many opportunities but are unable to finish our chances," said Schneider. "What we really need right now is to put up a good showing in our next game and hopefully our luck will turn."
The difference in the match finally came in the 89th minute when Christoffer Nogueira took a loose ball up the right flank, finding Liddiard on a pass that traveled about 25 yards in the air. Liddiard took the pass with Clan keeper
Brandon Watson coming up to challenge for the ball. Liddiard headed the ball once past Watson and again into the back of the net to give the Marauders a 1-0 win.
The Clan kept the ball on the Marauder's side of the pitch for most of the match and they kept the pressure on the defense with
Calvin Opperman's shot in the 17th minute hitting the post and a
Mamadi Camara's shot saved by goal keeper Mitch Taveira. After a U-Mary foul,
Adam Jones took a free kick attempt from about 30 yards in front of the net and his initial shot was blocked by the Marauder's wall with the follow up sailing wide left of the goal.
U-Mary faced 13 shots from the Clan but only one came on goal with four shots being blocked and the only shot on goal saved by Taviera. The Marauders also gave up seven corner kicks.
The Clan will visit Montana State Billings on Saturday, September 26.
