DuPONT, Wash. – The Simon Fraser women's golf team finished second at the Saint Martin's Invitational, the 2021-22 season-opening tournament that concluded Tuesday in DuPont, Wash.
The squad finished with a two-day score of 41-over-par 617, just one stroke behind Western Washington, and four clear of Saint Martin's. SFU trailed by seven shots going into today but closed the gap with a final round result of 19-over 307. A total of seven schools competed on The Home Course, which played at par 72 and 5,815 yards.
"Fantastic first event back after nearly 600 days since our last competitive round. We have a very young team with three of five playing their first ever rounds for SFU," said
Matthew Steinbach, in his fifth season as head coach.
"I'm impressed with how we carried ourselves on the course, we managed our game and played smart. We have a great team vibe right now and I'm excited to see this group develop and grow throughout the season. We're happy with our final results and narrowly missing out on the team title, we'll use this as motivation to get 'em next time."
Sophomore
Shirin Anjarwalla led the way for Steinbach's crew. She tied for third on the individual leaderboard at 7-over 151, concluding the event with a 4-over 76 today. Sarah Lawrence of Bellevue (Wash.) took home medalist honours after going 3-under (141) over 36 holes.
"I'm especially happy for our captain, Shirin, who played excellent golf all week and really led our team both on and off the course," remarked Steinbach.
In her university debut,
Ava Koukofikas finished eighth with a score of 10-over 154 after carding a 6-over 78 in the final round.

Brooke Brezovski and
Kassie Muanyam rounded out the SFU contingent with 20th-place showings (18-over 162).
Competing for the first time at the university level, Brezovski signed for rounds of 80 and 82. Sophomore Muanyam opened with an 86 yesterday before improving by 10 strokes on Tuesday to move up into a tie for 20th.
SFU's next tournament is the DBU Classic Sept. 20-21 in Denton, Texas, hosted by the defending NCAA Div. 2 national champion Dallas Baptist Patriots.
