BURNABY --- Simon Fraser University almost pulled off an upset over No. 11 ranked Western Washington before losing in five sets in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball action Saturday evening at the West Gym.
Set scores were 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 15-8.
The Red Leafs trailed 22-20 in the fourth set before grabbing the momentum and going on a 5-1 run to send the match to a fifth set. The fifth set was tied at 7-7 before the Vikings won the next five points. SFU got one point back before the Vikings won the final three points and the match, connecting on 10 of 20 attacks while SFU was 6 of 23.
The loss drops SFU to seventh in the GNAC with a 4-6 record, 7-12 overall.
The Vikings held an advantage in hitting percent .242 to .182, kills 67 to 57, and blocks 9 to 3 in posting the victory.
Jocelyn Sherman led the Red Leafs with 17 kills and 17 digs while
Brooke Dexter and had 12 kills on a .211 hitting percentage and 10 digs.
Abby Willett had eight kills in 17 attempts and hit .412.
Eva Person had 40 assists.
SFU has a pair of games next week against No. 9 ranked Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (Thursday) and Alaska (Saturday) in the West Gym.
