LACEY, WA. – The Simon Fraser volleyball team took care of business Saturday night winning decisively over Saint Martin's in straight sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-16) at North Thurston High School.
Jocelyn Sherman led the Red Leafs with a 15-kill, 11-dig double-double, hitting at a .355 clip.
Sophie Lachapelle contributed nine kills and three blocks while
Eva Person had 23 assists.
It was a welcome victory for the Red Leafs who had suffered heartbreaking 5-set losses in its last two outings. The win lifted SFU to 7-11 overall and 4-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Saint Martin's is 12-7 overall and 2-7 in GNAC play.
SFU out-hit the Saints .323 to .092 and had eight blocks to the Saints 5.
The first set saw Simon Fraser take a 17-12 lead before the Saints stormed back to eventually tie the game at 21-21. But the Red Leafs would grab the final four points from a
Brooke Dexter kill and a block, and a kill from Sherman and a block from Lachapelle.
SFU raced to a 13-3 lead in the second set and then held off the Saints, who were only able to close to within seven points at 18-11.
In the third, Simon Fraser led from the jump to the finish, although the Saints did climb back to within two points, 17-15, before the Red Leafs went on an 8-1 run to close out the match with a 3-0 win.
The Red Leafs return home for Red Night, a game Saturday, Oct. 15 against Western Washington where 300 fans will receive Red Leaf scarves and the band Savage Groove will perform. Game time is 7 p.m. at the West Gym.
