BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser volleyball team earned its first win of the 2022 NCAA season today with a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph over 20th-ranked Ferris State (Mich.) at the Western Washington Volleyball Invitational in Bellingham.
The set scores in the back-and-forth contest were 25-18, 20-25, 23-25, 25-20, and 15-11.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jocelyn Sherman led the balanced SFU offence with 15 kills. She also had 14 digs. Sophomore opposite
Brooke Dexter and junior outside hitter
Camryn Vosloh had 13 kills apiece. With seven block assists, Dexter finished the night as SFU's leading scorer with 16.5 points. Vosloh posted 15 digs.
Setter
Serena Gentile dished out 35 assists, outside hitter
Hanna Kolof had a team-best 21 digs and a pair of service aces, and middle
Abby Willett tied Dexter with seven block assists. All three players are sophomores. As a team, SFU out-blocked Ferris State 12-9.

With the scored tied 8-8 in the fifth set, Sherman recorded a kill to put SFU in front. Then Dexter and Willett combined for a block to make it 10-8. After a Ferris State attack error, Dexter knocked down a kill to cap off an SFU run of four-consecutive points to lead 12-8.
The Bulldogs closed to 12-10 before Willett and Dexter went up for a block to stop Ferris State. Junior middle
Kalyn Hartmann set up match point for SFU with a kill. The Bulldogs extended the match by a point, but fell on a Dexter kill that clinched the win for Canada's NCAA team.
In set 4, SFU put together a huge 9-1 surge to take control late. Ferris State was up 15-13 but Sherman started the run with a kill. A combination block from Hartmann and Gentile tied the score at 16-16, and they repeated the feat on the point that gave SFU a 21-16 advantage. The Bulldogs cut their deficit to 23-20 but committed two errors to conclude the set.
SFU was up 23-19 in the third set but fell on a 6-0 run. Ferris State won the second by taking six of the final eight points.

Level at 13-13 in the opening set, SFU took control with a 9-2 run – thanks in part to three Dexter kills and a pair from Sherman. The Canadian team led 22-15 and eventually closed out the set.
SFU will conclude the Western Washington tournament with a pair of Saturday contests, against California State Los Angeles at 9:30 a.m., and Regis (Colo.) at 5 p.m. Like SFU, both Saturday opponents received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Preseason Poll.
