BURNABY, B.C. -- Simon Fraser women's golf freshman
Izzy Ferguson sank a hole-in-one Saturday at the Saint Martin's Bishop Invitational in DuPont, Washington, highlighting an outstanding final round and weekend for the player from Ottawa.
Ferguson aced the 161-yard sixth hole at The Home Course (par-72, 5,852 yards) and added four birdies en route to a 1-under-par 71. It is tied for the sixth-best round in school history (total score) and tied for fifth-best vs. par.
Ferguson placed second for the tournament with a two-round total of 3-over 147, after opening Friday with a 4-over 76. Her 147 is tied for eighth-best on the Red Leafs' all-time list of 36-hole results.
Megan Billeter of Western Washington (1-under 143 (73-70)) was the individual medalist. She led the Vikings to the team title at 27-over 603 (310-293). SFU was five shots back at 608, the school's seventh-best 36-hole score all-time.
"I know they're disappointed in another second-place finish, but the women's team should be proud with how they played," said head coach
Matthew Steinbach. "After a great Day 1, they put themselves in the lead and a position to win. Unfortunately, Western Washington just played better today with a great team score. I know our team will use this as motivation and a stepping stone to get a little bit better. As a young team, they are facing so many new experiences and learning incredibly fast. They are building something special and it's only a matter of time until they break through with a win."
Ferguson's ace was her second eagle of the year, the most by an SFU player in a season and career. It was also the first hole-in-one for the team since Breanna Croxen's in the opening round of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout on March 7, 2016.
"It was a great week for Izzy and she definitely has good vibes at The Home Course," remarked Steinbach. "She made an albatross (2 on a par-5) in the practice round and then had the highlight of the tournament with her hole-in-one. In addition to the ace, Izzy did a spectacular job of managing her game over the two rounds to post her first top-5 finish."
Kassie Muanyam turned in another impressive performance, placing third at 6-over 150 (74-76). The junior from Nanaimo, B.C., had three birdies during the tournament.
Meera Minhas of Burnaby, B.C., another member of SFU's excellent freshman class, tied for 13th at 12-over 156 (73-83). She knocked in four birdies at the Bishop Invitational.
Junior
Shirin Anjarwalla (Nanaimo, B.C.) placed 17th with a result of 14-over 158 (78-80). She birdied the 10th hole in Saturday's final round.
With rounds of 82 and 80,
Chloe Tran (Langley, B.C.) tied for 82nd. The freshman completed the tournament in 162 strokes (18-over) and recorded three birdies.
SFU's next competition will be the Western Washington Invitational, Oct. 10-11 in Bellingham.
