SFU Women’s Golf Day draws 120 participants eager to learn golf basics

5/30/2023 4:30:00 PM

Individuals from the SFU community are planning to learn to play golf on Terry Fox Field with pro golfer and SFU assistant coach, Kat Kennedy, and the Red Leafs women's golf team.

Participants with no previous golf experience have signed up for the SFU Women's Golf Day introduction to the game in celebration of International Women's Golf Day and PGA of BC Women's Golf Week.

Kennedy is hoping sparks fly when the newbies pick up a club.

"I hope that participants fall in love with the game and celebrate their achievements and the camaraderie that golf provides," says Kennedy.

Participants are going to learn from a real pro.

Kennedy has been of member of the Professional Golfers' Association of Canada since 2018. Currently, she is a Class "A" Professional. Kennedy was the 2021 PGA of BC Women's champion, and has won many amateur championships. She starred for UBC during her university playing days and she is now one of two fulltime coaches with the SFU Golf program.

Kennedy says she is "dedicated to empowering women and girls to participate in golf and promoting community engagement between the women's golf community and the SFU community".

Registration for the first-ever SFU Women's Day of Golf was free and capped at 120 individuals.

Participants will have the chance to meet and learn from Kennedy and the student-athletes in a relaxed and social environment. They will also learn golf basics such as grip, stance, posture, and swing movements, a dynamic warm-up and have the opportunity to hit golf balls at different activity stations.

All equipment will be provided and participants will receive a welcome gift, promotions to local golf facilities, an opportunity to win prizes, and access to a golf apparel odds and ends sale. Through the session individuals will acquire fundamental knowledge about golf and discover useful resources to stay involved in the golfing community.

The action takes place Friday, June 2 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. on Terry Fox Field.
