SFU Athletics is pleased to announce Krysta Schaus as the new Interim Head Coach for Men's and Women's Golf.
Coach Schaus joined SFU Athletics in October 2023 as the Assistant Coach for Men's and Women's Golf. Before SFU, she worked an Associate Professional at the Toronto Golf Club and as an Assistant Coach for Men's and Women's Golf at NCAA Division I school Gardner-Webb University.
During her tenure at SFU, the Women's team won the GNAC Conference Championship and set a new team tournament scoring record with a two-round score of 596, breaking their own previous record. Both Men's and Women's teams achieved significant individual honors, including GNAC Player of the Year (
Michael Crisologo &
Meera Minhas) and Freshman of the Year (
Denby Carswell &
Dana Smith) awards. Additionally,
Dana Smith won the GNAC Championship with a record-setting score, while
Michael Crisologo nearly broke the GNAC all-time scoring record.
As a player, Schaus excelled in Erskine College's NCAA Division II program, where she won four tournaments individually and was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Year. At Erskine, she also won the Jake Todd Award for the senior athlete who best demonstrates outstanding athletic ability, academic achievement, leadership, sportsmanship, and more.
Among her other accolades, she was honored as the PGA of Canada Moe Norman Apprentice Professional of the Year in 2020. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management during her time at Erskine College and a Master of Business Administration while at Gardner-Webb University
"We are thrilled to have Krysta take the helm of both our men's and women's golf programs," says Breanne Watson, Associate Director of Athletics. "Her pedigree as a Division II golfer, experience as an assistant coach at the Division I level – in addition to the guidance and notable success she provided to both our SFU programs last year – made this decision easy."
Coach Schaus expressed her enthusiasm by stating, "It is an honor to lead Canada's only NCAA golf programs. I look forward to building on the strong foundation laid by Coach Steinbach and Coach Buchanan. Our coaching staff will maintain our tradition of recruiting top talent and fostering their success on the golf course, in the classroom, and throughout their future endeavors. I am eager to develop well-rounded leaders who will make a positive impact in their communities."
SFU Athletics extends its gratitude to
Matthew Steinbach for his eight years of dedication, including five GNAC Championships and seven NCAA Championship appearances. We wish him the best as he pursues his Master's in Sports Psychology at the University of Stirling in Scotland.
The appointment of Coach Schaus reflects SFU Athletics' confidence in her ability to elevate the golf program to new heights.
